Territorial cohesion and sustainable urban development are two important conditions to achieve sustainable economic development, social cohesion and global competitiveness of the European Union. Inclusion of spatial and urban dimension into the European cohesion and other developmental policies and efforts to make them more coherent are among key political activities in the field of spatial development. Their goal is to achieve a more efficient use of spatial potential to achieve Community goals set in Lisbon and Gothenburg Strategy and to encourage comprehensive and at different levels connected approaches for solving actual spatial and developmental issues in cities and regions, related to climate change and other challenges of modern times.
Process in the field of territorial cohesion and urban planning is based on intergovernmental cooperation between the Member States, the European institutions and other partners participating in this field. Activities performed by the Presiding country under its Presidency relate to implemetning Ministers' conclusions and adopted materials.
With 18-month programme of the trio of the presiding countries Germany, Portugal and Slovenia, Slovenia has undertaken to continue activities in the field of territorial cohesion and urban development.
