Environmental Priorities

Environmental agenda is strongly emphasized in the combined presidencies program of Germany, Portugal and Slovenia's covering the period January 2007 to June 2008. Slovenia chose climate change and biodiversity to be the priorities for its presidency work.

The 2007 Spring European Council set out the basic guidelines for a new integrated climate and energy policy. The Bali climate conference in December 2007 proved that the EU has a unique opportunity to show global leadership and become a role model for the rest of the world in combating climate change.

Preservation of nature and biodiversity demands constant attention. The EU is committed to halting the loss of biodiversity by 2010 and beyond, and the Slovenian Presidency will focus its activities in achieving this goal. It shall represent the EU at the regular meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity in Bonn in May 2008, where the EU will strive for progress at the international level.
