Announcement of the Mediterranean Coast and EU Macroregional Strategies Week (from 20 to 23 September 2017)

Ljubljana, 7 July 2017 – From 20 to 23 September 2017, Slovenia will host the traditional Mediterranean Coast and EU Macroregional Strategies Week on the Slovenian coast. This year, as before, much attention will be paid to discussing with various stakeholders the importance of the sea and coast, their natural resources and economic potentials, to drawing attention to risks that the coast is exposed to, both natural and those resulting from human activity, and to raising awareness of the importance of the sea and the coast for quality of life for all. We anticipate several days of activities and events that will be carried out in cooperation with several institutions.

Since 2007, Mediterranean Coast Day has been traditionally held on 25 September in all Mediterranean countries. 25 September was also chosen to honour Slovenia, which on this day in 2009 was the first among the Mediterranean countries to ratify the Protocol on Integrated Coastal Management in the Mediterranean, which promotes the integrated management of coastal areas as the optimum political framework for achieving sustainable development. From that time on, one of the Mediterranean countries has annually organised a central event, while related activities take place in all the countries of the Mediterranean region.

In Slovenia, this several-day event is placed in the context of cooperation in the macroregional strategies of the European Union, since our country represents the junction of the Dunabe, Adriatic-Ionian and the Alpine regions.

This year’s Mediterranean Coast and EU Macroregional Strategies Week, organised under the slogan "Living with the Sea", will take place from 20 to 23 September 2017 on the Slovenian coast. The events, aimed at both experts and the general public, will be carried out within the following framework programme:

     20.9. 2017: Official opening
Specific round table discussion, presentation of current projects
Conference on the media and communication of macroregional strategies
21 Sept. Conference on the media and communication of macroregional strategies, workshops
