The European Affairs and Investments Directorate performs tasks related to the preparation and management of investments, to legal matters and management of public procurement, to the efficient use of renewable energy sources, to coordination and provision of appropriate promotion of Slovenia's interests within the competence of the Ministry in the international community, and to public environmental protection services.

With regard to the preparation and management of investments, the Directorate (as a mediating and implementing body) cooperates with the Environment Directorate in the preparation of annual and multi-annual investment programmes for public utility infrastructure aimed at environmental protection and water management. The Directorate participates in the preparation of national development programmes; it prepares, directs and coordinates investment projects concerning the environment and water management; it coordinates the preparation of investment projects with local communities; it provides for the implementation of public procurement procedures, for the implementation of projects in accordance with decisions on the allocation of funds, for the provision of own financing, for the examination of situations and for forwarding requests to the paying authority; and it monitors and evaluates project implementation.

With regard to efficient energy use and renewable energy sources, the Directorate performs professional and associated administrative tasks concerning the development of policies of national programmes and Governmental regulations aimed at the promotion of environmentally friendly and efficient uses of energy; the use of renewable energy sources and cogeneration; the implementation of national promotion programmes; the management and coordination of international projects; and the fulfilment of international obligations within the competence of the Directorate.

With regard to international the Directorate coordinates and provides for appropriate promotion of Slovenia's interests within the competence of the Ministry in the international community. In accordance with Slovenia's foreign policy orientation and the requirements of the Ministry, the Directorate ensures the coordinated action of the Ministry in relation to particular countries and in international relations in general. For this purpose it provides a review of international activities falling under the competence of the Ministry and proposes, prepares and directs certain activities.

The Directorate also performs tasks relating to the performance of public environmental protection services of national and local importance.
